First of all, we need to determine our ideal weight. There are several ways to approach this issue. One way is to base our weight on a measurement of our body mass index (BMI). Generally, a healthy body mass index is between 18.5 and 24.9. For example if you are 5’ 4”, this would put your ideal bodyweight between 111-148 pounds. Having a high BMI may raises your chance for several health problems. To find out your BMI, use the BMI Calculator.

Another rule of thumb is to allow 105 pounds for the first 5 feet of height for man, while 100 pounds for woman. The reason for the difference for men and women is that men’s bodies are typically more muscular and muscle is heavier. For every additional inch above 5 feet, add 6 pounds for man, while add 5 pounds for woman. If you are shorter than 5 feet tall, subtract five pounds for every inch you measure below 5 feet (for woman). However, the final figure can be adjusted up by as much as 20% or down by 10% to account for an individual’s muscle mass and body type.
